What Is IDP123 Scoring?

There are so many different scoring systems for IDP, with new ones popping up regularly. There have been calls for a unified, accepted scoring system for the format to be put together. However, many people feel the delight of IDP is the way it evolves and changes from league to league.

Regardless, that doesn’t help fantasy managers looking for help with customized scoring systems. Therefore, it’s important when publishing rankings to ensure the scoring system used is stated and explained. In this instance, we have used IDP123, which we will break down below.

The scoring elements included in the IDP123 system are assisted tackles, solo tackles, passes defensed, QB hits, tackles for loss, sacks, forced fumbles, fumble recoveries, interceptions, defensive touchdowns, safeties, and blocked kicks.

Now for the scoring system itself, which is split into four levels — one, two, three, and six points. Three and six-point actions tend to fall under the category of impact plays, while the one and two-point plays are the bread and butter of defensive play — tackles. Here is the full breakdown of the IDP123 scoring system:

  • 1 point: Assisted tackle, QB hit
  • 2 points: Solo tackle, tackle for loss
  • 3 points: Passes defensed, forced fumble, fumble recovery, safety, blocked kick
  • 6 points: Sack, interception, defensive touchdown

Not all scoring systems give such weight to sacks and interceptions. However, those two plays can change the shape of a game almost to the level of a defensive touchdown. The same should be considered when thinking of how passes defensed can have a similar impact to a forced fumble.

The only part of this scoring that could do with a review is a fumble recovery at three points. However, a fumble and the recovery add up to six points, the same as an interception or sack does. Therefore, while not 100% perfect, it serves its role in this system.
